Field-Craft over Flash — Supporting Anemone with a Minimal Footprint

Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean in Anemone

When we joined Anemone, directed by Ronan Day-Lewis, with Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead and Ben Fordesman BSC as DP, one of the guiding principles on set was to preserve an atmosphere that felt as un-film-set as possible.

For our DIT, Joe Lovelock, that meant adapting our presence to suit the environment.

We worked from a discreet, camouflaged “treehouse” hub in the woods — housing Video Village, Sound, Lighting, Costume/MU and DIT — and deployed ultra-mobile monitoring: compact displays, iris control and false-colour analysis so Ben could follow performance fluidly.

With wide frames and long takes in play — often on windswept beaches or in the rain — the priority was to be exactly where we were needed, and invisible everywhere else.

The result was robust dailies and real-time decision-making, delivered with the smallest possible footprint.

It was cold, wet and relentless at times, but also one of those jobs we’ll always love.

Why this matters

Minimal, agile workflows support creativity and protect performances. They keep the frame clean, the atmosphere intact and the cast and crew focused on story, not on us.

Planning something similar?

Designing bespoke rigs and workflows around the needs of creatives is what we are known for. We know that to achieve the best results, one size does not fit all.

If you’re facing challenging locations or need the set to “disappear”, we’ll design a workflow that keeps pictures front and centre and everything else out of the way.
